So I was chatting with some high school buddies on Facebook and we were reminiscing about Division IV Vermont basketball at Trinity Baptist ... The conversation turned into who is the Top 10 players from Trinity Baptist Schools. Obviously there are players I remember as being great, like Scott Hull and Rick Kriebel; but I wasn't even double digits in years. So, we've posted an unofficial "survey" as to who they, may I dare say, we are. I think I went with, in random order; my brother Jamie, Josh Fleming, Dennis Poole, Matt & Ryan Vanderwarker, Andy Roy, Scott Guiel, John Buzeman, Nate Cary and I'm thinking quite possibly myself rounding out that Top 10 ... SMILE y'all ;) Let's get a game vs. Websterville's greatest alumni!
From Du in NY, "Honestly - I'd say that Jamie was head and shoulders above everyone I saw - other than that its a crap shoot. I would have been the best if i played more and you shot less!"
From "The Milkman," - Trinity Top 10....you listed some of the better players at Trinity and there were only 9 on your list. Its always a little tough for me to think that players younger then me were better then ones who played before me. Especially when i didn't go to too many games after I graduated and i don't recall too many players before 1991. Jaime Fuller is always gonna be a popular choice bc he carried Trinity basketball when the guards of the class of '93 were just getting their feet wet. One of the best teams had to be the class that had Andy Roy, Tyler Santerre, Dennis Poole, Nate Carey, on it when they were seniors. I think I played against them in a alumni game and i almost thought the alumni would lose. I don't remember "swing 5" that was probably the one Josh Fleming and i called "get ready to rebound"....what about "continuity" or "force" ?
From my brother - "Yeah, top 10. That's tough to think of. I def agree with Buzer about saying that players way after I graduated were top 10. A few I probably played against during the alumni games, but that's not really fair to judge them by that. I didn't really see anyone play after my brother's class, so my list would stop there. I would certainly include Coon Verburg in the top 10 as I'm sure he easily scored over 1000 points during his time. He was a senior when I was just a 7th or 8th grader, but he was a tough player around the hoop. As for plays I only remember continuity, force ..., and 5 (which meant...Jamie go out to the 3 point line and launch one - loved that play!). Oh I guess the "get the ball to Jamie" was a fun play too. Playing hoops at Trinity with all you guys that I played with were some of the best times that I can remember about high school. Thanks for bringing back the memories. Speaking of which, I gotta give props to Chicken Flap! ... Seriously, my brother (chicken flap) was #1 for all out hustle - all heart - play! Sorry you had to listen to me give you an ear full after every game. Nobody had a better finger roll than yourself. I gotta give props to Jack Frizzell who could throw the hardest bounce pass ever! Of course, no one could ever catch it either, but it was the thought that counts! later all."
*I like how my brother cut me out of the top 10 and then gave me props for hustling ... isn't that like saying, "Yeah, you weren't that good; but it was funny watching you dive for all those loose balls."???
more high school hype ... "Case (Coon) Verburg was a beast down low. Just recently in the past couple years, i watched a few games and Trinity had a kid named Matt Boardman that could really light up the scoreboard from beyond the arc and make the pinpoint pass to the guy in the post." - JB (VT)
"Since I was invited to speak on this topic of top 10 Trinity ballers I would have to say I don't have a whole lot to offer but I would like to compile a list of top ten players that stopped going to Trinity that most definitely would have been on the top 10 players of all time." RG (NY)
thoughts from RV (IL) - "Trinity's girls team in the late 80s and early 90s was really good. When Sarah Fuller, Heather Gagnon, the Gangwer sisters, and the other two sisters that lived across from the old building (cant remember their last name)- that team was REALLY good. When Lydia was a senior they got second in NEACS along with Heidi Frizzell, Robin Smith, and a couple other good players. As far as guys go - I loved playing with Buze. I remember a game against Christian Heritage where we actually took turns scoring each time down the floor. That team of Buze, me, Tim, Jason, and Scott beat the best team in Div IV that year (Rochester). As far as guys go here's who I'd put as top ten: Jamie Fuller, Josh Fleming, John Buzeman, Matt, Scott Guiel, Jeff, Tyler Santerre, Derek Poole, Luke, and probably Jack Frizzell. Honorable mention for Stephan Shankle and Jesse Lundberg"
